Office to Know: Academic Support Center

A very important place on campus is the Academic Support Center. It is a great resource for students, and is located on the second floor of Saint Joseph’s Hall. The Academic Support Center includes the writing center, tutoring help, and services with students with disabilities.

Why should you go to the Academic Support Center? Here are just a few ways it can help you;

-If you have a documented disability, you can come to the support center for extended time on tests, or technology assitance.

-Confused with how to cite a paper? The writing center can help you understand all types of citing formats, such as MLA, APA, or Chicago style.

-Want someone to proofreed your paper? The writing center can help organize and develop your assignment, and help you create a clear thesis and ideas.

-Academic Counseling is available in the Learning Center. You can gain helpful tips and expand your learning potential.

Meet CSSA Student, Meagan Corbett

As an undergrad at Saint Rose, Meagan Corbett was a familiar face on campus. She served as the Director of Social Events for Student Association (planning events such as Rose Rock, Harvest Fest, and blood drives), the Senior Events chair for Student Events Board, was a Resident Assistant, and was an officer on the Golden Knights Dance Club. She graduated with her B.A. in Psychology (focusing on Clinical/Counseling and Industrial/Organizational Psychology), and is now back at Saint Rose for her Masters in College Student Services Administration.

What is your program and why did you choose it?

College Student Services Administration- I chose this program because I was very involved in many extracurricular activities during my Undergraduate Career, held various leadership positions such as a Resident Assistant and a board member for both Student Association and Student Events Board. These positions involved a wide variety of programming and working with other college students. These leadership experiences made me never want to leave that field!

What has Saint Rose done for you?

Saint Rose has helped me develop into a better leader and have given me many opportunities to utilize those skills I’ve learned here.

What are your ultimate career goals?

I would like to work at a College/University specifically in the fields of Student Affairs, Admissions, or Alumni Relations

Why did you choose to continue graduate studies at Saint Rose?

I chose to continue my studies at Saint Rose for the small class sizes and the sense of community we have here.

What is the best/your favorite part of campus?

My favorite part of campus would be the Campus Green. My favorite time of the year is the mid-end of the Spring semester and getting to see everyone out there on really nice days doing homework, playing Frisbee, etc.

Who has inspired/influenced you at Saint Rose?

Too many people! The faculty and staff are very positive here and have a drive to help us as students become successful. I’ve definitely looked to those working in Student Affairs now as inspiration to continue my education studying in College Student Services.

What is the most difficult thing about Grad school?

The late night classes are difficult for me. I would much rather get class and other things done in the morning if I can.

What advice can you give to prospective students wanting to come to grad school/Saint Rose?

Get involved! Just because we are Grad students does not mean we can’t enjoy the other opportunities/events/organizations Saint Rose has to offer.

Office to Know About: Career Center

A very important office at The College of Saint Rose is the Career Center. It is located at the third floor of Saint Joseph’s Hall and offers students a variety of different services to help with preparing for the future. Here is a small listing of different ways the Career Center can help:

Resume Critique: Make an appointment and have someone from the Career Center help you write and develop your resume and cover letter.

Mock Interviews: Go to the Career Center for a mock interview with a staff member to work on interviewing skills. This interview is taped for you to take and keep as a reference.

E-Career Center: This website is for current students and alumni. Create an account and log on to find different jobs and internships all over the Capital Region, New York State, and beyond.

Credential File Service: Students and alumni can open a  Credential File. This is a confidential way for students and alumni to put information for graduate schools and employers. It can include reference letters, College of Saint Rose transcripts (unofficial copies) and a copy of educational certifications (if applicable).

Albany-Community and Things To Do

When you come to Saint Rose, you obviously will want to branch out and not spend every second on campus. You will want to explore Albany (and perhaps the surrounding Capital Region). Here is a list of things to do relatively close to campus;

Crossgates: If you like to shop, this mall is the place for you. It has over 75 stores for shopping, restaurants, a movie theatre, and the newest attraction is FasTrax Raceway, an indoor go-carting venue. If you don’t have a car to drive yourself, you can take the CDTA bus, routes 10 and 12.

Palace Theatre & Times Union Center: These venues are both located in downtown Albany, just a short commute from Saint Rose. If you browse their websites, you’ll see that concerts, comedians, plays, and sporting events occur here.

Washington Park: This park is within walking distance from Saint Rose. Some events that occur here are; Tulip Fest, Holiday Lights at the Park, and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. It is also a nice place to just walk around and enjoy the day, and perhaps have a picnic.

Lark Street: Lark Street is located a short distance from Saint Rose, and is close enough where you could walk, or you could take the CDTA. Lark Street has a lot to offer, from different places to eat, shop, and hangout. Lark Fest, which is a block party street festival with live bands, happens every Fall.

New York State Museum: Looking for something educational to do? The NYS Museum is the largest tourist attraction in the Capital Region, and has everything you need to know about New York State located inside. Admission is free.

Dutch Apple Cruises: If you’re looking to discover the sites around Albany in a fun way, take a site seeing cruise, and learn all about the history of Albany, while enjoying the water along the Hudson River.
